Men’s Health Week 14 – 20 June 2021

When is the last time we talked about the common issues affecting men?  Sometimes they may feel they are not heard or that we do not care.

Men’s Health Week campaign this year is focusing on men’s mental health in the wake of the pandemic. Even before the pandemic, men’s mental health and the greater risk of suicide in men was a cause of concern.  There is evidence to show that men do not tend to ask for help for anxiety, depression or for health issues.

Why is this campaign important?

To help men and boys live a healthier, longer and fulfilling life.  Mental health has been severely tested during the pandemic and the lockdown giving rise to insecurities and a sense of isolation.

Some of the issues that affect men include:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Domestic violence
  • Mid-life crisis
  • Being a good Dad
  • Anger management
  • Stress

Certain professions and jobs which are male dominated will have been affected more due to the pandemic.  This includes men working as taxi drivers, bus drivers or as construction workers for example.  These are jobs where workers will not have the option of working from home and will be more at risk of contracting Covid-19.  For boys home schooling will have added the risk of mental health issues.

So how can we all help?

The need to raise awareness of the men’s health and mental health issues along with challenges faced by boys as never been greater. Collectively, we can help raise awareness in different ways.

This can be done through:

  • Information sharing
  • Education
  • Encouraging men to talk about how they feel
  • Support the campaign for a Men’s health strategy

The government have made a commitment to Women’s Health strategy and it makes sense to have a strategy to promote and protect men’s health.

Common health issues in men include prostate cancer, testicular cancer, heart disease, diabetes to name a few.  Very likely we know someone close to us who may have some of these health issues.

This year the campaign leads up to Father’s Day which makes the campaign even more poignant as it affects us all.
