We may know someone close to us who is on the autism spectrum so marking World Autism Day or World Autism Awareness week (27.3 to 2.4.23) is a natural step in the right direction.

It is important to recognise and support our fellow beings with autism so we can help them feel valued.

At IMD Solicitors we take pride in being diverse, inclusive and equal. We wholeheartedly support this campaign, and this year we have chosen the World Autism Day as one of our key events to support.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2nd April as World Autism Awareness Day to “highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society..”

Some notable facts:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Those with ASD often have problems with social communication and interaction and may have restricted or repetitive behaviours or interests. They may have different ways of learning, moving and ability to focus, sometimes people with ASD excel at things non- autism people would find hard. They are like the rest of us, gifted individuals but sometimes due to ignorance they may face discrimination and isolation.
  • The official colour for autism awareness day and week is the colour blue. People wear blue to support autism awareness, the Autism Speaks campaign led with the strapline ‘ light it up blue’ is a call to raise awareness.
  • It is worth remembering autistic people have unique sensory profiles and may have different communication skills.  They contribute to the society like everyone else playing important roles including as parents, carers, business leaders, doctors, and even as famous mathematicians.

Famous people with autism spectrum disorder include –

  • Albert Einstein, Scientist and Mathematician
  • Dan Aykroyd- Actor and Film writer
  • Daryl Hannah- Actress and environmental activists.
