IMD Solicitors on the Fast-Track to Smarter Divorce Solutions

Speak to a member of our specialist international team of UK family lawyers today on 0330 107 0107.

The family justice system in England and Wales is undergoing a long-anticipated transformation aimed at reducing delays and costs for those navigating the complexities of financial separation. The Family Court’s Express Financial Remedy Pilot, introduced in April 2025, is one of the most significant recent steps in making family law more accessible and efficient for those with lower-value financial cases.

At IMD Solicitors, we stand ready to support clients through this new route, just as we’ve supported individuals and families at all financial levels—from straightforward separations involving modest assets to complex, international high-net-worth (HNW) divorces. No matter your financial background, our dedicated team provides strategic, culturally aware, and compassionate legal support tailored to your unique circumstances.

What Is the Express Financial Remedy Pilot?

The Express Financial Remedy Pilot is a new court initiative designed to simplify and accelerate proceedings for financial remedy claims involving combined net assets below £250,000 (excluding pensions). It is currently being rolled out in stages across England and Wales with the aim of reducing delays, court burdens, and associated legal costs.

Key Features Include:

  • Two-Stage Process: Unlike the standard three-hearing model, the pilot fast-tracks cases to a Financial Dispute Resolution (FDR) hearing within 16–20 weeks of application. If settlement isn’t reached, the case progresses to a Final Hearing around 10 weeks later.
  • Targeted Eligibility: The pilot applies to cases where the total net assets—such as equity in the family home, savings, and investments—are below the £250,000 threshold, excluding pensions, mortgages, and other liabilities.
  • Focus on Early Settlement: By encouraging more effective negotiation at the FDR stage, the pilot aims to reduce the need for prolonged litigation.

This initiative is particularly relevant for individuals who may not have previously found the court process financially viable or timely. It offers an alternative that is more streamlined, less adversarial, and easier to navigate, particularly for self-represented parties and those with fixed or limited budgets.

Why the Pilot Matters for Families Across the UK

The traditional family court process can be slow and expensive—particularly disheartening for separating couples dealing with modest assets. Court delays, legal fees, and drawn-out litigation can often feel disproportionate to the financial issues at stake.

The Express Route addresses this gap by making financial remedies more accessible and cost-effective for a wider portion of the population. This means:

  • Fewer court hearings and less time off work
  • Reduced legal costs, allowing for better budgeting during a financially stressful time
  • Quicker resolution, supporting faster emotional closure for all parties involved
  • Greater consistency, with more structured and predictable hearing schedules

This pilot is a welcome development for many families across the UK—particularly those dealing with the division of a single family home, moderate savings, or modest investments. It offers an efficient route to finality without compromising fairness or legal safeguards.
